Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a practice of mostly seated postures consisting of long holds (anywhere from 1-20 minutes!) that are meant to stretch the deep connective tissue of the body, especially the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

A yin practice is a complement to a yang practice which involves faster movement and strengthening of the muscles. Although a yin practice can be meditative in itself, it is an excellent preparatory practice to seated meditation. Stretching the connective tissue is said to release energetic blockages in the meridians (related to Traditional Chinese Medicine) and eases the flow of chi or prana in the body.
